Ode to a Runner

Oh to be a runner! My Dad ran regularly when I was growing up. Looking back I really wish I had joined him. If we realized how important our health was as children then just maybe we would be a healthier society. Not long ago if someone asked me what I did for exercise I would have told them I walk, when I can, around the block; I would then justify my lack of exertion by explaining that I am the mother of 5 children and that I work full time and… well, at that point I would just attempt to slink away. It wasn’t that I was being lazy, no; I had a serious lack of confidence. I was convinced that I couldn’t possibly run. Continue reading

Storming the Castle

When the plan first came about it was going to be a quick relaxing desert excursion over spring break. We would do a little climbing and a lot of wandering around in Canyonlands National Park enjoying the severity and beauty of desert life. That changed when I invited Taras. We settled on the North Chimney of Castleton. It sounded perfect a 4 pitch 5.8 that was well established and had a relatively short approach. So we got up pre-dawn and cruised through the desert avoiding all the deer that come out of nowhere in the wee hours between Canyonlands and Moab. Continue reading

Nearly Losing it at Lost Lake

Let me just start by saying : I LOVE COLORADO!!! Our 2012 spring season has been so warm, I had forgotten that winter was only a few weeks past and that there was still snow up in the mountains. It was the last weekend of March and itching with cabin fever, my friend and I packed up our three dogs and headed up to Lost Lake for our first official Spring Hike! Continue reading

Iowa’s BRR Ride – The Original Winter Ride

RAGBRAI is known nation-wide. The Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa is celebrating its 40th year in July of 2012, and it’s never been more popular. There is another bike ride, however, that is near and dear to Iowans and grows in attendance each year.
